Welcome Session & Underwater Dreams Presentation
Welcome Session and Keynotes are all held in Oasis 4 and are streamed live in Primrose B, PSCC, Pasadena Room, Renaissance Hotel and Horizon Ballroom 2, Hilton Hotel.

Underwater Dreams Screening & Panel Discussion featuring Allan Cameron

The panel will be moderatated by Jon Corippo, CUE's Director of Academic Innovation, and will include Dr. Cameron along with CUE members Julie Goo, Diane Main, Bill Selak and Sean Williams.

Dr. Allan Cameron (Ph.D, Elementary Education) taught computer programming at Carl Hayden High School in Phoenix, AZ.  Along with fellow teacher Fredi Lagvardi, they started an afterschool robotics team. The team and underwater robot, Stinky, became the material for film "Spare Parts & Underwater Dreams."

Underwater Dreams, a documentary written and directed by Mary Mazzio, and narrated by Michael Peña, is an epic story of how Mexican immigrants learned how to build an underwater robot from Home Depot parts and to defeat engineering powerhouse MIT in the process. The competition, however, was only the beginning. These boys forged a legacy that could not have been imagined.

If you enjoy the film and want to bring more STEAM and a student-centric pedagogy to YOUR school or classroom, join an esteemed panel of learning experts featuring Allan Cameron who will share exciting STEAM and leadership examples from their schools, answer questions, and give some extra details to your vision of a 21st century school that truly changes student lives.

No host bar and light appetizers - come early! Registration not required.

*Note this is a new Keynote timeslot for the National Conference.

Computer Science for All: America's Untapped Opportunity

Software and computers are everywhere, revolutionizing every field around us. But the majority of schools don't teach computer science. Code.org believes every student should have the opportunity to shape the 21st-century and wants to turn this problem around. Code.org has already helped over 100 million students try computer science for the first time with one Hour of Code, partnered with 70+ school districts to bring courses to schools, released a free online learning platform with 10% of students in K-8 US schools enrolled. We've helped change policy in 16 states to better support computer science. This is just the beginning of a bold vision to bring this foundational field to every K-12 public school by 2020.

Join us after the keynote for an opportunity to win a raffle prize of a Kapp 84' Capture Board sponsored by SMART

Since 2001, the Student Technology Showcase has been a much anticipated part of CUE’s annual conference in Palm Springs. The Showcase was originally sponsored by the California Department of Education and supported by the California Technology Assistance Project regions and featured student technology integrated projects that aligned with the CA state standards. With the introduction of the Common Core State Standards and the focus on STEAM and the Maker Movement, CUE is re-imagining the 2016 Showcase to reflect how students are learning by doing. The CUE Student-Powered Showcase (SPS) will invite attendees to actively participate with students in creating, problem solving and learning. Attendees may collaborate with students on a robotics or 3D printing project, or they may get down on the floor to figure out how a Sphero works. The showcase is guided by a Task Force of innovative CUE members and is produced in partnership with the Orange County Department of Education.
